Dig Deeper Into your Closet :-)

My casual reading habit led me to read " Confessions of a Shopoholic- Sophie Kinsella " long time back and today in my 30's I can relate to it so well. Seriously Cost and Worth are two different things.
We have to give it to the Instagram World for fueling the " Want" culture. The intimidating fashion trends and the pressure to live up to it is fast catching up. But my contention in writing this post is to  use this social media to document our own reality checks. How often do we rotate clothes? How often do we stop shopping and ace the resolution ??

The mantra is simple.Let's start this way. When we try to do a flaunt post, keep a dossier of the looks, which in turn will prevent us from  buying similar colors , and will reintroduce us to the ignored ones lying low in our closet. Be a proud " Re-Wearer".

Why it is important to dig deeper into one's own closet is because , statistically garment waste and dumps generate 200 million pounds of landfill a year. That's 43% more than even e-waste. Estimates show that an average woman spends more than 50k/year on fashion needs, and yet a majority feel they don't have anything to wear. What needs to be re-thought is the way we shop.

So consciously lets try and adopt pre-loved clothes concept, closet sharing initiatives and recycle clothes into something new and sustainable. Invest in pieces that are cohesive, complementary, high-quality, well fit, clothes that can be mixed and matched, dressed up and down. Appreciate your own wardrobe as a hunting ground for fresh fashion, look and styles. Consciously join the
re-wear bandwagon. Invest in learning the Sociology of Style , that helps buying stuff to complement your own existing wardrobe , utilize your own wardrobe to uncover some of its own hidden and underutilized treasures. It not only saves money but also forces you to revamp your look.
The problem lies in the fact that we make mistakes when we choose our clothes or accessories.

      • We invest in clothes keeping special occasions in mind, and most of the times they end up being used only once.
      • We buy standalone items that are difficult to pair.
      • Items found on sale, finding an item on sale is great but forcing yourself to buy it just because it is on sale will result in a closet full of regret.

Dig Deeper into your Closet to find hidden gems . We end up shopping mindlessly because of the innumerable options staring at us through our phones and computer screens. We have all become a bit lazy to think creatively because are constantly being served " Looks" -and we buy something we see, we tend to have a mindset that it is the ONLY way to wear it. Shopping should be an experience and not done on a whim.

Shop consciously and create a personal wish list and pick only what is on the list,if not then pause and reflect. Slowing the pacing will result in approaching your purchases more deliberately resulting in a closet that fuller and more satisfying.
  • Adopt a No-Shopping Challenge

  4. Good post. Thanks for writing it. Totally agreeing to your idea.

We should buy clothes only in need

Another reason why we have many clothes is because of the gifts we get. Not sure how that be addressed :)

  5. A minimalistic mindset is a welcome change in this mad world where everyone is eager to outsmart the other in owning things. A nicely structured post; stating the problem, its size and suggesting simple steps to solve it. More importantly it needs courage to talk and do something about it.

  6. In this mad world to flaunt ourselves from head to toe, we are spoilt for choice. Right from the Rubber bands to slippers / shoes, stresses our Mother Earth when discarded. Leading minimalistic life(of course definition varies from person to person) will help. But 95% of population hardly worry about the trash or landfills. This mindset has to change and let us be try to bethe harbingers.
