Some Chicken Soup/Vegetable Soup for the Parenting Soul,Part 3 ;-)

I can breathe easy as this is going to be my final post on the Parenting Series. From the 1st post in this series to the second and this final one, this has been very close to my heart. As a mother of two, I wish to re-read these pages again and keep working on my parenting skills. We are not really here to prove anything to anyone but introspect ourselves to try and bring up a generation that is healthy both physically and mentally.

1. Motivate your child to be Sensitive

  • Young children can be bullies or be bullied. Be objective as a parent and encourage to stand up for themselves or discourage them when you see a dented attitude.
  • Don't tell children to not cry or weep when they have an emotional moment, because they don't have to tackle situations as we adults do .
  • It is terribly upsetting for kids to see parents arguing. Refrain from fighting before them and adopt self control and unleash only when the children are not around. ( Let's face it that every pressure cooker needs a whistle to release pressure !)
  • Tell him/her to try and differentiate between the Right and Wrong and not try and adopt to unfair or rude tactics just to be accepted in a group.
  • Don't be a pushy parent when it comes to identifying the child's limits. Revisit your own childhood and try to identify your child's problem with a non-judgmental and unbiased approach .
  • Your child may sometimes find it tough to share their feelings. Pick up such signals like an uncomfortable silence or restlessness and work around it.
  • Teach your child to be sensitive towards people less fortunate than them. Explain economic inequalities in our society to inculcate social conscience.
2. Motivate your child to be Appreciative
  • Try to send the child off to school with a hug. Positive vibes work the best on children.
  • Make it a habit to talk to your child about  the day. Do not be dismissive even if the child feeds you with the most insignificant details.
  • Keep all channels of communication open . Your child should never hesitate or think twice before approaching you.
  • Tangible affirmations and appreciations go a long way. Refrain from comparisons even among siblings as kids are sensitive to indirect criticism .
3. Motivate your child to be Environmentally Aware
  • You need to stir love and curiosity about nature in your child.
  • Sensitivity towards resources, electricity, water, optimal lifestyle is the need of the hour , looking at the way we have bruised your environment.
  • Take short walks with your kids talking about the kinds of tress and flowers around, keeping our surroundings clean. Encourage them to get their hands dirty while cleaning apartment premise, staircase and community area.
  • Help have a small terrace garden or plant pots and make it their responsibility to take care of them.
  • Empathy towards animals are some basic upbringing rules that every child must have.
We may all sometimes wonder, why do we need so many Do's and Dont's for raising children?? Reality is that neither are we as sorted as our parents were, nor are our children as accepting to rules and parental words as we were.
We are definitely a quickly burning out generation whose priorities are changing dynamically with the situations around us at work/home. We are running for time that never seems to be enough. The children on the other hand are more aware and more interrogative than we ever were to our parents. Their curiosity and sensitivity is pushing them to explore more than they should and it is our job to channelize their ample energy into productive upbringing.

Cheers to a healthy Parenting and a beautiful Childhood to our children !!!
